No one can resist big-eared kittens!

I have always loved pets and as a child I grew up with outside pets only.  I loved our pets, just as I assumed everyone else did.  But, I never realized how different a relationship is with an indoor pet until I had one.

About six years ago, I was living in my first apartment (before that I lived in military quarters) with my roommate Alysha.  I was going through a tough time in life (yes, man trouble!) and I decided that I wanted a puppy.

Unfortunately, I discovered that our leasing company only allowed cats and smaller animals — no dogs.  So, I decided to get a kitten.

Alysha was a huge fan of Siamese cats and she convinced me to try and find a Siamese cat.  So, off to the pet store we went.  I know what you’re thinking; I should have rescued or adopted a kitten.  But, we were determined to find Siamese cats and we were going “just to look.”

When we arrived at the pet store, I was overwhelmed by the cute puppies and kittens!  I asked if they had any Siamese kittens, and they did not.  However, they had other exotic cats that they wanted us to see.  They were Egyptian Maus, a breed of cats that I had never heard of.  After all, we only had outside “barn” cats growing up.

So, I agreed to take a look.  They were so adorable, to say the least!  There were two of them, and Alysha and I took them both into one of those little play areas.  Well, I instantly fell in love with the playful silver one that couldn’t stop playing with my shoelaces and she fell in love with the smoke one that loved to cuddle!  I surely couldn’t choose one, so I agreed to buy both of them… before asking the price!  I was pretty floored when I found out how they cost, but I was young, single, had very few bills and had the cash.  So, I caved!

Alysha and I leave the pet store, kittens in tow.  Egyptian Maus come in three different colors: silver, smoke and bronze.  I had a silver one, which I named Roxie (the name I had picked out for my dog!) and Alysha came up with the perfect name for the other one – Moonlight.  They were just so darn cute, with their oversized ears and little heads!  I had no idea how much I would fall in love with them.

What adorable kittens! Aren’t you glad you got them instead of a dog!
